Location - On the Solway coast 14 miles South West of Dumfries. Origins - Dating from 1781 the towns wealth was historically based on Granite Quarrying with the local stone being particularly hard and used in many worldwide landmark locations including Liverpool Docks. Dalbeattie loosely means "Vale of Birches" and much of the natural local Birch forest was felled in the towns early years providing hardwood for the Bobbin mills of the 19th Century for the spinning and weaving industries of the industrial North of England. Historic - Buittle and Eddingham Castles lie just outside the town respectively to the West and North. Orchardton Tower lies towards Auchencairn 4 miles South. Today - Dalbeattie is a thriving dormitory town serving Dumfries, and a shopping and service centre for the coastal villages of Kippford and Rockcliffe. Tourism and agriculture are the new economic forces. Austins - Our large and central office is in High Street literally at the heart of the town. Comment - Dalbeattie continues to strengthen its position as the dominant town in this part of the Solway Coast drawing business from the desirable and popular holiday and retirement villages along the coast. A high profile presence in Dalbeattie is at the core of Austins strategy for the next five years. |
